Executive Summary
Rapid urbanization in many African cities has outpaced the development of adequate waste management infrastructure, leading to public health risks and environmental degradation. The Urban Sanitation and Circular Economy Initiative aims to finance the construction and operational enhancement of garbage collection networks and recycling facilities. By transforming waste into resources, this program aligns with the Fund’s mission to improve moral, cultural, and economic conditions through sustainable community development.
Program Objectives
- Establish efficient, community-led garbage collection systems in underserved urban areas.
- Finance the construction and equipment of material recovery facilities (MRFs) and recycling plants.
- Create sustainable employment opportunities in waste sorting, logistics, and recycling industries.
- Reduce environmental pollution and mitigate health hazards associated with improper waste disposal.
- Promote circular economy principles by converting waste materials into valuable industrial inputs.

- Procurement of waste collection vehicles, containers, and logistical infrastructure.
- Construction of sanitary landfills, transfer stations, and composting facilities.
- Installation of sorting lines, shredders, balers, and processing machinery for plastics, metals, paper, and organic waste.
- Development of digital platforms for waste tracking, route optimization, and citizen engagement.
- Training programs for waste management workers on safety, hygiene, and operational best practices.
- Public awareness campaigns promoting waste separation at source and community participation.
