Public Transportation and Sustainable Mobility Program

ACF-2026-PR-6-EN

Executive Summary

Access to reliable, affordable, and clean transportation is a cornerstone of economic opportunity and social equity. Many African communities remain isolated from markets, healthcare, and education due to inadequate transit infrastructure. The Sustainable Mobility and Community Connectivity Program supports the deployment of low-emission vehicles (electric, hybrid, or CNG) and the development of efficient route networks. By reducing carbon footprints and enhancing connectivity, this initiative drives shared prosperity and improves the quality of life for urban and rural populations alike.

Program Objectives

  1. Deploy fleets of public transport vehicles powered by cleaner energy sources to reduce urban air pollution.
  2. Expand transit routes to connect underserved peri-urban and rural communities with city centers and essential services.
  3. Lower transportation costs for low-income households through subsidized fares or efficient operational models.
  4. Enhance road safety and reliability through modern fleet management and infrastructure upgrades.
  5. Stimulate local economies by improving access to jobs, markets, and educational institutions.

Target Beneficiaries

  • Commuters in high-density urban areas and expanding peri-urban settlements.
  • Rural communities lacking consistent access to healthcare, education, and markets.
  • Public transport operators and cooperatives transitioning to green technologies.
  • Local businesses benefiting from improved labor mobility and customer access.
  • Municipal authorities seeking to meet climate action and urban planning goals.

Eligible Projects

  1. Procurement of electric buses, minibuses, or other low-emission public transport vehicles.
  2. Installation of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, including solar-powered stations.
  3. Development of smart ticketing systems and real-time tracking apps to improve user experience.
  4. Construction and rehabilitation of bus stops, terminals, and dedicated lanes to enhance efficiency.
  5. Training programs for drivers and mechanics on maintaining clean-energy vehicles and safe driving practices.
  6. Feasibility studies and route optimization planning to maximize community coverage and impact.
